چکیده

The issue of sustainability is at the top of the political and societal agenda, being considered of extreme importance and urgency. Human individual action impacts the environment both locally (e.g., local air/water quality, noise disturbance) and globally (e.g., climate change, resource use). Urban environments represent a crucial example, with an increasing realization that the most effective way of producing a change is involving the citizens themselves in monitoring campaigns (a citizen science bottom-up approach). This is possible by developing novel technologies and IT infrastructures enabling large citizen participation. Here, in the wider framework of one of the first such projects, we show results from an international competition where citizens were involved in mobile air pollution monitoring using low cost sensing devices, combined with a web-based game to monitor perceived levels of pollution. Measures of shift in perceptions over the course of the campaign are provided, together with insights into participatory patterns emerging from this study. Interesting effects related to inertia and to direct involvement in measurement activities rather than indirect information exposure are also highlighted, indicating that direct involvement can enhance learning and environmental awareness. In the future, this could result in better adoption of policies towards decreasing pollution.

Participatory Air Pollution Monitoring Using Smartphones

Air quality monitoring is extremely important as air pollution has a direct impact on human health. In this paper we introduce a low-power and low-cost mobile sensing system for participatory air quality monitoring. In contrast to traditional stationary air pollution monitoring stations, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of GasMobile, a small and portable measurement system ...

Indoor air quality monitoring in urban areas using Smart Sensing Technology

Recently, indoor air quality has attracted the attention of policymakers and researchers as a critical issue like that of external air pollution. Indoor air quality is more important as people spend time longer indoors than outdoors. Indoor environments are closed compared to external environments providing less opportunity for the pollutants to dilute. The emissions contain many substances tha...

Embedding Quality in e-Learning Implementation through Evaluation

In relation to quality, evaluation is often used synonymously with quality assurance and monitoring processes (Ehlers et al, 2004). However, evaluation has other purposes, such as for development and knowledge (Chelimsky & Shadish, 1997). In this paper, I present a view of evaluation as an instrument of quality enhancement rather than quality assurance, one that can be used creatively and power...

Participatory Urban Monitoring from your Car

Detailed on-line measurements of city air quality are necessary to support compliance with air quality standards and emission strategy developments and to inform both policy makers and the general public in a timely manner. Current approaches to pollution monitoring, however, rely on very small numbers of stationary nodes. Providing detailed air quality information is a particularly hard challe...

Coordinating measurements for environmental monitoring in uncertain participatory sensing settings

Environmental monitoring allows authorities to understand the impact of potentially harmful phenomena, such as air pollution, excessive noise and radiation. Recently, there has been considerable interest in participatory sensing as a paradigm for such large-scale data collection because it is cost-effective and able to capture more fine-grained data than traditional approaches that use stationa...
